This is the same issue I posted about before but started a new thread since my old one is buried and I've now changed to thinking maybe its a spark issue rather than fuel.

I started the boat up this morning. It started up and ran fine for about ten to fifteen minutes warming up. It then began the sputtering and surging thing again. I was planning to do a spark test then compression and go from there so I wanted it good and warmed up. Also wanted it to get where it was running fouled up so I could test during that not when it was fine. When it began fouling I let it go a little longer then shut it off. It took me about fifteen minutes to get everything together and start the spark test but when I did it ran fine through every plug on three cylinders while testing each one. Every plug was showing constant spark. It was tough to see how "good" of spark because I was outside the garage and its so bright out but I could definitely see the spark and none of it was erratic. But again, it had started running fine again at this point.

I hooked all the plugs back up and ran it some more and it began the surging/sputtering problem almost immediately. I shut it down to try to do the plugs again while it was doing this. Disconnected the #1 plug and it ran worse than even the crappy it was already running. I hooked it back up and disconnected #2 then tried firing it up again the first three tries it sputtered a quick once and wouldn't start. After three tries it wouldn't even try to fire any more...it acted like it was flooded. I quit there for now to let it sit.

I'm thinking now maybe I have a firing problem but thought I'd see what you all had to say. When it runs crappy it intermittently gets one or two second surges where it revs high then sputters around nearly wanting to die in between those..sometimes it does. My thought now is maybe one or more of the plugs is sporadically firing allowing fuel to build up in the cylinder before it fires again and when it does its igniting excess causing the quick rev then back to sputtering while its not. Would this be the case?

I know I need a new rectifier and plan to get one ordered this weekend. Would like to know if I need something else to order along with it before I do. Does it sound like I might be on the right track? Any suggestions where to go from here?
