Owner says the trim motor is toast. My question: Basic repair/replacement? Or, would this be pretty involved and/or expensive?

I don't see any "Power Tilt Trim" unit on that engine, hence my confusion. If it did have a PTT unit, it would be one of the older style units that has a vertical cylinder on the outside of each transom bracket, in which case, the electric motor assembly would exceed $500 easily. Perhaps the present owner removed the assembly due to this factor?

The PTT units that we are used to seeing today (unit between transom brackets) did not exist until 1976 and that was only on the V6 model. They were not designed to be on the V4 models until 1977.

Gotcha, thanks Joe! Yah, he must have just taken it off.
