Re: 1975 70hp Johnson wiring?

I feel like I am working on my Triumph Bonneville except for the positive ground part! I believe I have a solenoid, neutral safety switch, and/or a key switch problem.

Is it possible to wire directly to the solenoid, skipping the key switch and using safety switch as a starter button? I am thinking ground cable from bat to starter, power cable bat to large solenoid terminal and on to starter from top large positive cable terminal (usual set up). But then directly from positive bat to lower small terminal and then use a wire to a motor ground through the safety switch. Of course you know I?ll try scratching the block ground with the wire without the safety switch if it still won?t go?

I am trying to eliminate any suspect parts, and see if I can get this motor to turn over. Does anyone think this will work or will I blow up???

Anyone have other suggestions??

What is the problem you are having? Tell us what it's doing and what you have done as far as troubleshooting (why do you think solenoid, N/S switch, and ignition switch). could be something simple and somebody here may have the answer for you and save you alot of time and trouble as well as money if you short out something (i.e. rectifier, regulator). Give us a little history and perhapts somebody can help.

Thanks for your help, it's now running. The ground to small terminal was intermittent. Somewhere I must have a corroded ground wire. I wired another ground wire directly to the ground cable at the engine block and Wha La! Now on to the steering cable problem............
