My recently-acquired 1975 70 hp Johnson starter does not always engage when I turn the ignition key. This version has the control with a priming switch just below the ignition key and neutral safety lock on the shifting lever. When the starter does engage, the engine starts and runs fine. With my limited knowledge, my guesses are: (1) some type of ignition switch safety over-ride that I don't know how to operate; (2) an intermitently faulty ignition swith; (3) a faulty solenoid; and (4) worn starter brushes. Any suggestions on trouble-shooting would be appreciated.
