I have a 1975 johnson 6hp that I'm having problems with water intake. I have the 5in extension in the lower unit and when removing the lower unit the copper water tube popped out. Now i can't seem to get the tube back into its place inside the black grommet on the engine side. When I start the engine the water is shooting out the side in the midsection out the little hole. Should the water tube just pop right in? When I replaced the water impeller last year someone on here recommended me to get a evinrude kit, and this kit has the metal cup that the water impeller goes into. It's really tight in there and was really hard to squeeze in. Anyone familiar with this engine and issues I'm having? I can post pics later of everything. Thanks

Evinrude and Johnson were the same motor except for the paint.----

Tube should slide in fairly easy with some oil or grease as a lubricant. Of course, there should be a reasonable amount of resistance as the rubber is squeezed. Sounds like your upper grommet may be damaged. Just replace it. Are you pre-assembling the tube into the upper grommet first, then the lower one as you raise the gearcase into position? You should.

Agreed, Evinrudes and Johnsons are the same thing. And yes, the pump was changed in later years. And yes the new style replaces the old style if replacing the entire pump. Finally, there is no problem with the old style (with a new old-style impeller) if it is still in serviceable condition.
