1974 to 1978 johnson 85 hp powerhead

will a 1978 85 hp johnson powerhead work on a 1974 eninrude 85 hp. have a bad piston on the 74 was gonna replace it with the 78. thanks

you should cross reference exhaust housing and midsection numbers, as well as the lower motor cover and driveshaft

It definitely will not work. You can use the 85 or 115 powerheads through 1977, but nothing more recent.
