Hi, I just purchased an OMC 225 Sterndrive. The trim motor is not operating. The batteries are fully charged. All I get is a clicking sound. My question is what is involved in getting the trim motor out to be fixed? Do I take the outdrive out or pull the engine? Is there some other tests I should be looking at before pulling the trim motor?

Thanks for your help in advance

What a pain in the butt these units are. First look behind the engine on the port side and you will see the trim motor. Two bolts hold the motor on. Remove the motor and check to see if it works. The motor turns a shaft that goes thru the transom and turns a worm gear which in turn spins the clutch pack that is attached to the little gear that makes the big arm on the side of the outdrive go back and forth to raise and lower the drive. If the motor works fine, then the problem can be anywhere aft in the above workings.

Where are the bolts located? I see no place for them?

Are you talking about trim (in front of engine) or tilt (raises and lowers outdrive for trailering)? I'll assume tilt. Before you take the motor out, check or replace (they're cheap) the solenoids.

Ken is right on about this tilt system being a pain in the arse.First off ,clean all electrical connections, battery, solenoids, plugs, until they shine. No better off?Now have a look at the oil in the tilt pack. This tilt pack can be a leaking mother so a little milky oil is not uncommon, but if you get some rusty, watery crap, then you know that a tilt pack is on the horizon if not the cause of your current problem. However it looks, fill that pack back up with some nice 10w30 motor oil,let it sit overnight, and try it out ,first at the switch and eventually with battery power direct to the motor.

Beakers
Before anyone can really help you, you need to be clear what the problem is. Is it TRIM or TILT.

The Trim motor is under the front motor mount and run by switch on the throdell lever. It is used to trim the boat under power.

TILT switch is usually on the dash and used to tilt motor up for trailering.
The Tilt motor is on port side transom. Problems can be fuse blown, bad solenoid, bad tilt motor, Clutch pack, or lack of grease in outdrive pins.

Before anyone can help we need to know if it is a TRIM issue or TILT.

Capt Ken Idea is a great place to start if it is a tilt problem. Pulling the motor off will tell you if it is electrical or mechincal. Only thing I would do first in check the 50 amp fuse on starboard side of engine near the starter.

Re: 1974 OMC 225 trim motor problems

Thanks for all of the great replys. I was having a tilt motor problem. After following the Cylmer manual instructions, pull the strendrive, clutch housing and the the 2 bolts on the tilt motor (which is all I really had to do in the first place, I got to the tilt motor. The motor had water in it and some other gunk. Cleaned it all up ( the unit was all rusty) and cleaned up the armiture and the unit is toast. I guess the wire that is wound on the armiture is corrided some where down in there. So I am now looking for a new tilt motor. All is well, I found the clutch housing had no oil in it and I will pull the outdrive a part and check it all out. Might as well take the time and get everything and cleaned up.

Thanks so much for all of the replys
