I have a '74 mercury 200 20 hp. This is my dad's old motor, and years ago he traded boats and let the controls go with old boat, and switched it to tiller on new boat. I am converting it back to remote controls and have purchased a mercontrol exactly like the one he had. Problem I'm having is with the shift cable working backwards. This is my first time doing this so I'm probably overlooking something simple. First off I have been trying to attach the shift cable on the side that has the external shifter handle, is this wrong, and is it supposed to connect on the side with the throttle cable?

I am quite certain it connects to the side with the shifter handle. But I just cannot figure out HOW the cable connects to the shifter linkage? The barrel on the cable is bigger than the hole on the linkage?

I'm not very familiar with these boats/motors yet. But I am beginning to restore a 1975 Mercury 850 on a Rebel bass boat myself. If the 200 was built like the 850, you may be missing a few pieces. I know on mine (see attached) there is a slide piece that the cable attaches to then it in turn attaches to another piece of linkage that goes to the part you had pictured.
