I have a 1974 Johnson 4 hp outboard model 4R74R. What is the difference
between model numbers 4R74R and a 4R74 ? I am looking for more info about this little motor. I know 4 is hp, R is rope, 74 is the year. But what is the last R stand for ?
Thanks

It was put there to worry people like you. Naw, seriously, it means nothing. If there had been a mid-year engineering change, the R would have changed to something else to indicate it. But I see no changes for that year.

Can anyone tell me what a 4BR74R is?? Looking around the web most references to it are from Australia. It is likely that this one was brought over from England by a friend of mine's father. Has built in fuel tank. What does the B mean?

Almost certainly means that it was made in Belgium. It's not listed on the Official parts list. Quite often find that with these small Belgium made engines. Built in fuel tank is a bit of a clue too.

Thanks, that makes sense. I did not know they built them in Belgium.
