Hello all i am looking to find out what color the wires for the ignition on my 1974 Johnson 115 HP outboard motor. I have lost my key to the ignition, and want to re-route the wires to the dash to a new ignition, but I can't seem to figure out what wire is the ignition, starter, acc, ect. Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a schematic for your engine and control box. It's too large of a file to be attached in iboats. PM me with an e-mail address and I'll bump it to you.

Purple = "A" Terminal

Purple/White stripe = "C" Terminal

White = "S" Terminal

Black = "M" Terminal (Reg Terminal)

Black/Yellow stripe = "M" Terminal (Raised Terminal)

Red/Purple Stripe = "B" Terminal

Joe, is there really any difference in the two M terminals? They just connect together to kill the engine. Just like to know.

Ok is there any wire that goes from the ignition switch to the choke switch to activate it when the key is turned to ignition and start? The reason I ask is like I said before, I can't get access up to to the ignition switch to see.

I think the digram that I e-mailed to you indicates that a purple wire connects the choke switch and the A terminal.

If you will contact Joe Reeves, I think he can get you a replacement key. If I'm not mistaken there are only 30 different key cuts for all those OMC switches. Your switch should have a number on it that matches one of those thirty key patterns.

Most good locksmiths have a set of those keys. If you drag your boat over to the shop, the locksmith will test fit his keys until he finds the one for your switch and will use that to cut you a new key. Ask me how I know.:D

You may want to get a spare.:D

Re: 1974 Johnson 115 HP outboard ignition wiring

If your ignition switch incorporates the push in key feature, my explanation of the wiring is what you need.

If your switch does not have the push in feature, as burroak states.... a purple wire can run from the "A" terminal of the ignition switch to one terminal of a seperate choke switch, then the purple/white wire would connect to the other choke switch terminal.

Ok thanks for all the help, I'll take my boat to a locksmith before I put in a new ignition. Stupid me, I was planning on getting a spare key cut las year but never got around to getting to the locksmith to get one made. Oh well another lesson learned the hard way.

Right where the key would normally insert..... there's a number there. What is it? I probably have a spare key din my remaining stock.

There is no number on the ignition switch anywhere, the key I had for it was a birggs & stratton key, so I don't know if the ignition has been replaced before or what.
