hi guys,

I have a 1974 evinrude 70 hp with trim and tilt option. I am going through the trim system and will be changing the orings in the cylinders. I bought 2 kits off of ebay. evinrude number 174520. the kit looks like this.

there appears to be 8 or 9 orings per kit. I opened up the cap on the right hand cylinder and pulled out the shaft and piston. On the piston I saw the big oring and in the same groove as the oring a skinny plastic ring with a separation so you can remove it. is this suppose to be there? I don't see this plastic ring in the parts schematic. also do I need to remove the circip and take the piston off of the shaft? or do I not need to go in there? how would I remove the piston? stick the shat in a vise? im guessing that's a bad idea. Im using this schematic as a reference. this is the same trim setup I have on my boat.

also in the cylinder that Im doing in the cylinder itself with the piston and shaft removed you can see a long shaft with a hex head on the base of it. its number 46 in the schematic and called a relief valve? I think I need to remove it to change a small oring under it? how to you get it out? none of my sockets fit.

can someone give me a basic rundown how to rebuild these cylinders and tips and tricks and what to look for and what to change when doing this? and I think the left cylinder is more complicated because of the sending unit and sensors and things?
