1974 evinrude 50 hp sparking - and not in a good way

this weekend while putting the motor down i noticed sparking. the mechanism that locks the motor in the up or down position... well it seems to be rubbing against the lower cowling. when it rubs, it sparks!

any ideas?

Isn't that cowling made of aluminium ? I didn't think aluminium could generate a spark. Maybe a wiring harness problem, shorting out somewhere. Just thinkin.

you have an electrical short somewhere, could be bare place on positive cable, rub when you moved motor.
