1974 Evinrude 135 Carburetor Problems?

My "strangler" bogs down at WOT, particularly when I turn. While its struggling if I throttle down and then back up, all is well, at least for a while. I've been able to rule out a fuel supply problem because squeezing the fuel bulb doesn't help. BTW-the engine won't start cold unless I shoot some starter fluid in the carb. Does it sound like a carb rebuild is in order or does anyone have any other ideas?

Welcome to iboats bandit.
I'm not even close to a pro. as some of the guys here, but this is what I've learned while I've been here at iboats.
You are going to hear this and it will be good advice to take it as I did when I got here. Get you a manual for your motor. Do a compression test, That will tell you a lot. Then do a carburetor rebuild, make sure you have clean fuel mix and decarb your motor.
I would quit using starter fluid in the carbs as it will burn your motor up.(carb cleaner will remove all the oil from internal components)
I was having the same problem as you described and $75.00 made my engine run like a new one. The manual has all the instructions and pictures.

Check your float height in the carbs. May be low, causing the problems in turns. While in there, you might as well rebuild them. Possible that your choke solenoid is not activating the choke plates. You can check that by removing the cowl. Flip the choke switch lever on the control box and -check for choke linkage movement on the carbs.

Thanks for the info guys. I replaced the fuel pump and the motor started up great. However, now it has a miss or cut-out at WOT that it never had before. Any ideas before I have the carbs rebuilt?
