1974 50hp engine miss/no idle

Hi all, I'm new here as well as new to the world of working on outboards. I've done a lot of automotive and truck repairs over the years but this is my first outboard engine. My 1974 50hp Johnson will not idle and seems to have a miss also. I've rebuilt both of the carbs and put new spark plugs but it's still running just as bad. I've spent a lot of time adjusting the low idle needle valves but no improvement. I'm beginning to thing there might be other problems I need to look for. One thing I have noticed is sticky type fluid oozing down the side of the powerhead coming from what looks like two black units in the stator under the flywheel. Could this be a sign of something wrong there? Any and all advice on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Tim

The black oozing fluid is probably the coating on the stator melting. I have a 1972 50 hp with black tacky streaks from under the flywheel also. I had a faulty rectifier on mine and I think it caused the stator to overheat.
Hopefully the experts here can give you more insight on what can overheat the stator.

The fluid is clear not black but there must be something wrong there. I replaced the pump impeller and it doesn't run hot. Gas is pooling in the top carb so maybe I still have a carb prob??

I thought the 72 and the 74 would have had the same power head, but after looking up part numbers for both, it turns out they are different. I am no expert, but I have rebuilt an outboard before with new Pistons, rings, bearings, etc.
I would think the experts would ask you for your model number so they would know the exact engine, pull start vs electric, etc...
Have you done a compression check, have you done a spark check, can the spark jump a 7/16 gap.
Also, if you don't have a manual for that engine, it's a good idea to get one.
Gas pooling out of the carb is probably the float not closing the needle, which could be a bad float, dirty carb, float not adjusted properly.
That's all I got, hopefully my reply bumps your topic to the top and more people will reply.

id pull the flywheel and inspect the parts, they might be shorting to ground.
Other than that do as 456 says

Well, I did a compression test and got 145 psi on both cylinders. Spark tester showed a strong blue spark at 7/16" on both leads. I'm guessing that it's still a carb prob or maybe reed valves? I'm going to pull that top carb apart again and see if I missed something,,,,,,,,,

Went though the top carb again and put in a new float as well. No change in the miss/pop problem. Anyone have any idea what to do next??????

Going down to auto parts store and buying the socket needed to pull the flywheel!

I pulled off the flywheel and the magnets are a bit rusty. The sticky fluid is definitely coming from two black round units that are part of the stator located 180 degrees opposite each other. other than that I can't see anything grounding out in anyway. Is there anyway to test the stator or just shell out the $200 and replace it ?

Lots of great info on the CDI site! I don't have a DVA adapter but will be doing all the checking I can with my multimeter and post the results. Thanks Guys for all the help!!

The ignition charge coils are the ones that are leaking. Waiting for a new stator to arrive. The trigger seems to test ok with an ohm meter so I'll be leaving that alone.
