1974 -- 110 (9.8) Pinging

My dad says that his 110 (9.8) 1974ish outboard has started pinging. I haven't heard this myself but his description makes it seem like a 4 cycle labort knock. He's trying to blame the Ignition Control Box as some of the wiring has coroded isulation. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

I have a 9.8 110 merc that had corroded and parcial bare wires comming out of the box.....My box was bad but it did not ping ....it would run a minute under a load then one cly would quit fireing and it would only run on one cyl......I don't know what the ping would be but doesnt sound like a switch box to me.....

where might i find a test procedure for ignition control box ?
