My husband and I are the proud new owners of a 1973 Starcraft 19' aluminum boat that we are trying to restore. Since this our first attempt at restoring a boat, we have plenty of questions. So, y'all are likely to see me hanging around here a lot.

This is the boat as it is right now, lying upside down in front of my dad's warehouse, waiting for us to finish painting it.

I'm doing my fair share of the dirty work too! I've been wearing paint on my fingernails, and not the kind commonly referred to as "nail polish", and in my hair for days now.

Re: 1973 Starcraft

It's a Starchief? The title only says it's a Starcraft. We had no idea what actual model it was. It's been through four owners that we know of since 1999. We know this because we had to track down the first of them in order to get a title to it.

My husband told my sister's husband that he wanted an aluminum fishing boat. The brother-in-law, of course, knew exactly where one was. He had seen the boat--sad, lonely, filthy, and neglected-- in a friend's yard. He got it from his brother and had intended to fix it up. He now has cancer, though, and is just too sick to work on it. He sold it and the trailer to my husband for $500.

We have another old boat, a 1975 Thundercraft Magnum, that I grew up with. Sadly, it now has multiple cracks and leaks, and is going to have to be retired. It has a nice 70 hp Johnson motor on it that we plan to put on the Starcraft. It also has two new seats in it that we can use, and we may also be able to use the windshield as well.

I'll admit that I was not happy when Mr. Coalminer came dragging this thing home. It was a terrible mess. I call it the SS Minner. Now, though, I think I may be more obsessed with it than he is. My sister described it as "the kind of boat you cruise around Cape Cod in." Although it'll probably never see Cape Cod, that's exactly what I want it to look like when it's all done.

LOL. :D

I'm a woman too BTW. Just got a beautiful 65 14 foot runabout. :) Watch out - this stuff is addicting! :D

Oh, and that looks like a fun project you have!

Re: 1973 Starcraft

So this is the boat you were painting with the wagner! Great looking boat! Welcome to the starcraft fleet!

I am also glad to hear that the HVLP is working out nice for you! Amazing how a cheap HVLP sprayer can be a lot nicer than those wagner's.

Good luck on the resto, and don't hesitate to ask some questions.

Re: 1973 Starcraft

Welcome CMW, we with the Starcraft obsession understand your pain/joy. Take a few hours (days) and look at the restorations that have been done and are ongoing. You will find a treasure of information on restorations here. There are a bunch of Starchiefs on here too but it really dosen't matter what model boat it is because the basic structure is the same for all. Even though you may not 'see' a lot of ladies on here do not believe they aren't involved behind the scenes. Heck, in most cases they are the ones encourageing us:D
Besides, someone has to do the dirty work and not all of us has youg children that volunteer:redface: You have past the first test, pics are the main requirement on here 'cause we like to keep up with friends. The insanity continues.......

CMW that could be a Chieftain as well look for the identification plate somewhere near the helm it will have the Model info motor max size and boats max capacity and weight. If your lucky. This is what it should look like. pic courtesy of NorthBeach

Re: 1973 Starcraft

I don't think there's a plate in it. I can't help but wonder if maybe it was lying in the floor somewhere and we threw it out with the garbage. I'd like to know, for sure, what the weight capacity is, and what size engine it can use. I have the HIN. Is there any way to determine from that what model it is?

Re: 1973 Starcraft

one place to start might be to take a tape measure to hull and get exact centerline length. if it's 18'4", it's probably a Starchief. if 19, i think they made mini Islanders in that size. not sure abt Chieftains (but thought they were all 21'+) or hull ID #.
