I have a 1973 Sportwin. Gave $150 bucks for it. The shifter would not move so I dropped the gearcase unscrewed the lower nut on the shift rod and pulled the lower unit. The shifter handle on the top end of the motor moved freely now, so I attempted to move the shift rod in the lower end with pliers. Its frozen. I removed the gear from the lower unit. the only thing left in it is the shift rod. It will not budge. Sprayed PC blaster, tapped on it all different ways, still frozen tight. How do I get the rod out without bending it up. It seems like the only way to do it is beat it out. ????

Well, I would soak it really good for a while. 50/50 acetone with ATF. I've never seen one of those get stuck before. If you have it apart, I would soak it from each side and try tapping it loose again.

Will soak it for a week and see what happens.

Check in the cowl for the problem. There is a safety mechanisum that will freeze the shift rod. You should be able to figure how it all works by observing it while shifting back and forth from ingear to neutral. Back your throttle off all the way. Hope this helps. Best of luck. Rick.

Well, he said that the shifter handle moves freely now, plus he has the lower unit off and apart. :)

That's right the rod I am talking about is in the lower unit. Its frozen tight. As mentioned I dropped the gear case and got it all torn apart. The rod goes into the housing on the lower unit and connects to the gears, then it runs through the housing and pops out the other end. Its stuck and will not shift the gears.

Sorry for the misdirection. Read your post but obviously didn't take it in before starting to think. Follow 1946Zephyr's post. I haven't run across it being stuck once the lower has been dropped. Rick.

Can you explain more? If the gearcase is dismantled, there should be only a bushing and an 0ring seal holding the lower shift rod into the lower unit.

put boats dot net in fot the stars. Don't know why it edits that out??

Yea, I found it odd that part would be stuck too. I wonder if someone put lock tite in there as a prank.

I would see which direction the brass bushing comes out and just tap on the side that would drive it out.

That's exactly right. Shouldn't this rod move when I apply pressure or tap on it? The reason I took it all apart is because it was stuck in reverse and would not budge when moving the handle. Once I dropped the gear case and removed the lower screw holding the upper shift rod to the lower rod the shift handle moved freely so I assumed the problem was in the lower end? Are you guys saying I should not be able to move the lower end rod by pushing or tapping on it? I am trying to figure out why it won't move out of reverse and maybe my assuming a lower end issue is incorrect.

Well, it sounds like something is stuck in there, which is unusual. You have the gear assembly out and the lower unit detached entirely, so, the shift rod only has contact there where it goes through the gearcase. It is very odd that it got stuck there, where the bushing and o-ring is, but it is possible. You may have to apply some heat to it, if soaking doesn't work. Push comes to shove, you'll have to drive that baby out and replace it.

sorta confusing...lower unit is off-gotcha-,the upper shift mechanism moves freely-gotcha-, have you removed the skeg, prop shaft, gears, dog, bushings, etc., the shift cradle and pin, and you now have just the lower shift rod which is frozen in the seal/bushing ?

Re: 1973 Sportwin 9.5 Shift Rod Stuck

yes. i needed a water pump for it so i brought the lower end with the stuck shift rod with me to my local Evinrude Guy. He said that corrosion got down in the sealed O ring area and made the rod imobile. He knocked it out with a special tool that saved the rod. We cleaned out the area around where the rod slides down into and replaced the O ring and its perfect. I guess corrosion got to it.
