1973 'Rude 65 HP Voltage

There have been a number of posts recently about high voltage readings. My 65 HP has a Stator. Voltage at the dash gets up to 16.8V after the motor is run for a while. I fried a Garmin Depth Sounder with this voltage. Can a regulator be installed in the main power supply wire to the dash? If so, what should be used and where can I buy it? I'd like to cut my dash voltage back to 12.5-14V. Thanks, this is a great forum!
