My brother just replaced the plugs, wires, rebuilt the Carbs and fuel pump because the motor would not keep it's prime and would die at idle and low speed. This did not fix the problem completely. I found a couple of air leakes around the fuel pump and fixed them myself. Now the motor will idle fine, appears to be keeping it's prime good enough and runs great at full speed. However, it still dies at low speeds just past idle. I got to looking at the spark adv and throttle screws and noticed they don't touch anything in nuetral or when the throttle is all the way open. Come to find out my dad tinkered with these screws (backing them out) at the poor advice of a local mechanic in an attempt to fix the previous problems. My question is how do I set the spark advance and throttle screws appropriately? I suspect the spark advance is causing the motor to die at low speeds, and fear not having it set correct could damage the engine. I have a repair manual but it only refers to the idle adjustment screw. I can't find any information on the Spark Advance or Throttle screws. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you!

FYI for anybody else with this motor that may be having problems with it dieing at low speed. The spark adv., and throttle screws do not adjust the carborators. This motor has 2 carborators, one on top, and one on bottom to the left of the distributor and spark adv /throttle screws. Each carb has it's own fuel mixture screw that are both hiding behind plastic air-guards. I had to look forever before I noticed the tiny hole in each guard where the screw-driver goes. I had to back them each out one full turn from lightly seated then slowly move them in at 1/4 turn increments until the motor died at low speed (running in forward just past nuetral while docked on trailer). 1/4 turn back on each screw from there and it runs perfect now (any further and the motor flooded out). I would not touch the spark adv or throttle screws unless you know what you are doing!

I have one last question. Since my dad messed with the spark advance screw while the motor was off and not at wot it should be fine right? I ended up putting it back to lightly seated at wot with the motor off, and the motor runs great now after adjusting the carbs. Do I need to take it to a mechanic and have the timing checked/ spark adv screw adjusted if it is running fine?

The spark advance screw should be set properly or the engine could burn a piston

Thank you for all of the help! I would have never figured out what was going on without your diagram. I will get it into the shop asap.
