I recently bought a 1973 Johnson 9.5 hp 9RL-73B LONG SHAFT and the only way I can tilt and lock this motor is to remove the engine cowling and reach inside with a pair of pliers and pull a metal bracket thats attached to the release cable, then manually move the tilt rod into position. Does anyone have a parts diagram or even a good picture of how this thing is connected? Its a flat metal piece with a hole in it and is attached to the release cable. Hope the pics help and I can get this little piece back where its supposed to be. Thanks, Jeff

Just for your information I saw an OMC manual on Ebay for your engine this morning. It had a buy it now price on it and it was a very good price. Most for your motor sell at double his asking price. It was for an Evinrude but that does not matter. Rick.

Re: 1973 Johnson 9.5 hp tilt mechanism help

Thanks again everyone. After removing a large glob of grease I found the bolt and re-attached the link and my tilt is now working. Just finished rechecking that the points were set on .020, rebuilt the fuel pump with the kit from NAPA, and getting ready to overhaul the carburetor. Hopefully she'll start up and then I plan on de-carbing this thing.
