Going to look at a boat today, with 1973 Johnson 85hp. Any advise on what to look for? Is this a good year for this motor? The owner claims it runs well. Thanks, eddy622611
Check compression on all four cylinders looking for over 100 psi and within ten percent oof each other. See how it cranks cold and then how it runs. They are good solid motors if cared for, but only share parts with the 73-77 series. Make sure it is indeed a 73 and not an earlier electric shift model
Thanks for the replies, When I check compression are there precautions so I do'nt burn up the ignition system? What type ignition system do thease motors have? Do the 73 models shift with cables? How will I tell for sure what year it is? Thanks again, eddy622611
Take out all of the plugs and either pull off the safety lanyard or keep the ignation off and jump the solenoid to turn it over. 73 models shift with cables
