Are you saying you ran it without the muffs, then put them on when it seemed hot?

My, how many times have I said this? You cannot test a water pump by running a motor on muffs.

Being as it is a 1973 85hp, you need to disassemble and check the water pump. They were notorious for the rubber impeller coming loose from the stainless hub. Then the hub rotates, but the impeller doesn't. I've seen dozens of burnt up motors where that happened.

Is the paint discolored and wires melted where they touched metal? If so, add that to the dozens.

I ran it with the mufs on. and how hard is it to disconnect the lower unit to check the impeller? And can I go buy a new impeller at a local parts store?

Do you know where the water is suppose to com out if the motor because its old and has no pee hole the Manual said above the prop it should come out of the six holes on each side but nothing comes out. Does it need to be moving in the lake to push enough water up through the water intake?

Also check the vernatherm (thermostat). If it's stuck shut no water will circulate through the block, even if the impeller is working. Start the engine when cold. Hold your hand behind the two exhaust relief ports at the top of the midsection. After about a minute, the thermostat should open. When it does, water droplets will start to form on the palm of your hand. That's normal. Suggest you get hold of a factory service manual to guide you though your repairs. There are quite a few factors with the water pumps on an 85 hp

Impellar, impellar key, water tube alignment, thermostats, water deflectors in the block, passages in the heads and the tell tale.

Before you proceed..... do not start the motor again until repairs are made. Get a manual.
