Re: 1973 Johnson 6hp throttle

Michael.......I just had that problem on my Johnson 25 hp. Pull the cowl off and look at the roller on the carb. It should be between the two marks on the throttle cam, NOT the two marks on the armature at the start position. If the roller doesn't reach those marks you're basically trying to start and run it with the butterfly closed. I assume once it's started that you're slowly pushing the choke lever back in to the off position.

Having said all that, I took my boat to my marine mechanic and he adjusted it. LOL I have no idea how but I'm sure someone will come along who does know how.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Hey Michael......did you get your problem resolved. Don't know if you saw this recent post but here's how to adjust the throttle cam:

"I am not personally familiar with the 1991 model but for link and sync with the carb on the motors I am familiar with, the motor's throttle cam will have a mark. The carb roller should just touch this cam at the exact point of that mark. If it doesn't, hard starting will be your biggest problem and reduced performance from improperly set spark advance timing, will be the next.

On my motors there are two 5/16" hex nuts on the starboard side of that cam. If you loosen those nuts the cam can be adjusted back and forth to set this properly.

The other hard starter issue is the choke. You will want to determine that it did get fixed properly. The first and easier check is to look at it. When you pull the choke lever does it look like the butterfly closes. It should."

Wish I would have known this before I took my boat to my mechanic. Could have saved a few bucks! lol

Update y'all I got a chance to look at it and the cam throttle control plate is worn out where the the piece from the carb rubs on it so when the trottle turns to where start is its not pushing the thing on the carb to give it fuel

Re: 1973 Johnson 6hp throttle

I've go a 68 and had the same problem with that part. Not knowing what to do I elongated the screw hole with my dremel which allows the cam to come out further. Not sure if that was a proper fix and really haven't put any time on the motor so I'm not convinced I did good but it did seem to work the night I did it. Funny thing but I was not convinced the cam was all that worn down but it was the only thing I could think of to bring it out to the cam follower. Hows that for a confession. Best of luck. Rick.

Yeah that sounds like it would work but I got to work today and it was aluminum so I passed a little bead right along the cam and built up on it and buffed it down to size but I just got home from work and it's 730 at night so I'll try it tomorrow and see how good it works
