I have a 1973 Johnson three-cylinder 65 HP motor on 1 1973 Glastron V165. I hit some sand in shallow water ther other day and now there is oil leaking from around the prop. It's leaking several drops a minute.

Obviously there is an oil seal behind the prop and I assume I damaged it. Can anyone describe the procedure to get to it and replace it. Or could it be something else.

I didn't hit the sand too hard but the prop, which was brand new, shows a couple of inches of abrasion. Once I got out of the sand it ran and shifted fine. I only noticed the leak after it had sat in the garage a few days.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

First, be sure that the oil is not just unburned oil from the engine. That is normal for your motor. The smell and color of the oil will let you know which it is.

You would have to pull the bearing carrier to replace the two seals properly. You might want to check the prop shaft to be sure that it is straight. If you take the gearcase off and take it to a dealership, they can make short work of that job:

See the parts diagram for your model here: http://12.2.215.22/pub/default.asp?SessionId=4e55911f4e9e46b59d88571f8eafecf1&Lang=EN&brands=EJ

gear oil has a very distinct rank smell. exhaust goo smells more like gas and oil. unless you hit really hard, sand usually does the impeller more damage, than the seals.
