Hi, I have a 1973 Johnson 115 hp model 115393. I am having the hardest time finding a carb kit to rebuild this motor. They must not have made many of these engines because it has been a headache finding parts. Any way, I can find a lot of kits for the 115hp 1969, 1980-1995. but nothing for the 1973. I even went down to Texas Boat World and the best they can get is individual parts which some are spendy$$$
My question is has anybody rebuilt these carbs and what parts did you use? The carb kit I can find almost looks identical to my carbs. Anybody have any ideas?
Thank you

They made lots of these motors.!-------Take the carburetors apart and order whay you need.--------Most likely just a couple of gaskets and needle and seat.-----Not much else goes wrong with them.------What is the motor doing / not doing.

I'm going to guess that it's an 18-7046. You'll need 2 of them. They're about $17 apiece. I've got a 1976 115. Works Great. Readily available.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, racerone, do you know much about these engines? I am kind of interested in the history. My model was only made for a year and parts seem imposable to find. The motor runs great when its hooked up to the hose, but I took it to the lake and it just dies under power and its hard to start. I'm thinking its a carb problem so I'm starting there. Then I will sync it (any advice there?) Any other ideas? Thanks everybody.

73 was considered an oddball year.----No internal engine parts from 72 will fit and no internal parts from 74 will fit.-----So start your trouble shooting with a compression test.---There are some good used parts available if you take the time to look.

Start with a compression test. No point in putting any $ into it if the compression is not strong. At least 125 lbs per cyl. If it's ok, then check to make sure you have spark on all 4 plug wires. Test for spark when the engine is fully warmed up.

Ok, so I still can find the right carb kit. 439076 seems to not be the right kit, but I still cant confirm or deny that. Iboats does not list a 115HP motor build in 1973. I think at this point this motor was rare and they quit building parts for it a long time ago. I think I'm going to run a compression check then tear into the carbs. I will probably order 439076 kit which I hope is close and see what parts I can use. Thanks for you help. Any body else have other ideas?

The motor is not rare at all.----They built the same # of 115 HP in 73 as they did in 74 and 75 as fas as I know.

racerone, that may be true but as the part searching I have been doing so far seems to say, these 1973's are rare. Also I have model 115393 which is even the more rare of that year. There is another model number for the same year and 115HP and it seams a bit more popular. I do wonder what the difference is. I have a hard time explaining this to people (understandable) such as when I had to replace the ignition. The wiring on the 115393 is different and requires the original ignition. No aftermarket ignition would work. Texas Boat World has been unable to find parts for my motor and when they do, they usually say "I've never seen that before." I know it sounds weird but that the story of my motor. Thanks for listening, lol.

For 73 there is only one model posted for Evinrude 115 HP and only one Johnson model 115 HP for 73.---I think you need to understand that your motor is not rare !!----Of course if you are talking to a 25 year old clerk with a computer then I can see the confusion !!!!!!
