Re: 1973 Evinrude Fisherman 6 won't throttle up
Howdy, Fireboat. Your symptoms are pretty common, and have two most common causes:

1. Fuel starvation caused by a failing fuel pump or a gummed up carb. If pumping your primer bulb gets it runnning it will confirm fuel starvation.

2. Loss of power in one cylinder due to loss of compression, reed valve sealing, or spark. Pull your plug wires, one at a time, while it is running. If the engine slows or dies that cylinder is good. If no change, that cylinder is dead.

If you have a dead cylinder, hold the plug wire 1/2" from the block. If you get an arc, the spark is good and the problem is either with compression or reed valve.

The above might not isolate the trouble. If that happens, tell us what you have found and we will take it from there.

My book doesn't cover the '73, but earlier models in that same line used .030 plug gap, and so did later ones. I think .030 is safe.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

Red sky at night. . .
JB
