Hello to All. Just when you thought you new a motor well.... I was trying to tilt my motor up today and it was locked. There is a lever called a tilt lock lever that once you get the lower unit up a fair way will lock the lower in one place. On the way up it makes a few snappy/ratcheting sounds that gave me the impression it would be locked at any or those points but indeed it isn't. Does the reverse lock always lock the lower but even more so when it's in reverse? Can any one explain the way this is supposed to work. Mine is locked unless I reach down and move the revers lock out of position regardless of what gear I'm in. Thanks for your time. Rick.

I believe the reverse lock is spring loaded to push it against the tilt pin. When you shift to neutral or forward there is a link that pushes the reverse lock away from the pin. It sounds like something is bent, broken, or out of place on yours, as the reverse lock should only spring forward and engage when the motor is shifted to reverse. If you take the motor off the boat and lay it on its back, tilt the transom bracket up a bit, then look at the reverse lock as you shift between forward and reverse, I think you may be able to spot whatever is not connecting to move the reverse lock.
As for the tilt lock, the motor can be locked in 2 tilited positions: half way tilted, and fully tilted. With the lever pulled out when you tilt the motor it'll automatically lock in either position. To release you push the lever in and slightly pull up on the motor to release the lock. Hope this helps a little, and good luck.

I should add that my 9.5 is a 1965, and yours is a '73, but I don't think they changed much in this area. Also, my motor is 150 miles away, so sorry I can't look at it right now for you.
