I want to change out the impeller on my 1973 Evinrude 6 hp outboard. I have removed the 4 bolts to drop the gearcase, but am not sure how to disconnect the shift linkage which I am assuming is what keeping it from coming on off. I don't want to break a fine little motor that runs like a sewing machine.<br />Thanks, Mitch B.

Look for a small oval shaped access cover just above the lower unit and remove it. then you can seperate the shift linkage through the access hole....

This may sound scary and unreasonable to you ,but the powerhead has to come off on this unit to remove the gearcase. There is a mechanism of roll pin and springs at the top of the driveshaft that need to be diassembled in order to pull that gearcase down. Not so hard as it sounds though.Disconnect fuel ,choke ,throttle, and kill switch.Six or eight bolts on the bottom of the lower engine cover.Carefull with these bolt as they have a tendancy to sieze, but once remove, a small amount of prying should free the P..H. and you'll see what I mean.
