I have a 1973 Evinrude 6 HP motor that has sat in my basement for 6-7 yrs and has not been ran I went to clean it out the other day to get it ready to be sold and after doing some maintance to the motor I found that it would not turn over so I took the cover off that conects the spark plugs and pistons and it had some build up and black stuff on the inside but I still can't get it to turn over.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get it to turn over besides taking it all apart and replacing everything or do I have to take it in and have a mechanic do the work?

So if I am reading the articles right if I put this TC-W3 oil on the cylinders it might get them unstuck other wise I will have to take the whole thing apart and redo everything?

How I do it, lay the motor face (carb down) pistons up, spray cylinders with a good penetrating oil, let it soak for a few days. after the soak wipe away as much of the remaining oil as possible take motor outside heat top of pistons with a propane torch until it stops smoking then let cool. spray/ rub cylinders with light oil find a way to brace motor and try to work the flywheel nut with a good socket and breaker bar, if no movement repeat steps until you get the slightest movement, once you get movement work back & forth until complete rotation. good luck.

Thanks for the info kobibass I will try this when I get home from work and let it soak for little over 4 hrs then take the torch to the pistons.

Question about the flywheel nut prob a stupid one but any how the fly wheel should turn by hand when not running or is it stationary until moved with the aid of the socket?

WisOhio - If the motor ran 6-7 years ago and has been in your basement, it shouldn't be locked up to that extent. There may be something else holding as in the lower unit. I think kodibass' method is speaking of removing the head (torch the pistons). I would remove the lower unit and try to rotate the flywheel before I went through the mentioned methods. If you choose to do that, read/search about the lower unit. It can be tricky to remove / install.

certainly with the sparkplugs out you should be able to move the flywheel by hand...the flywheel turns in a clockwise rotation looking at it from above
