On the Right hand side of the motor (Starboard) there is a hole approximately 1/2" that comes up from the exhaust riser into the engine compartment is there something missing from this hole? It is blowing exhaust fumes (smoke) back into the cowling. I bought the motor used and there was nothing there to begin with.

That's kind of odd. If I remember correctly, that is the hole that the rubber-covered cable for the electric shift came up through on the 1972 models. Since the '73 no longer has electric shift, the hole serves no purpose and certainly should be plugged. Or for that matter, should it have even been drilled?

The parts list at the BRP site doesn't seem to be working so I can't see if there is a plug listed for the hole.

You nailed it F_R.

I went by and visited with an "old salt" today and he said the 1973 & 1/2 block covered the hole but the first half of the year the hole had to be plugged.

Lower unit had hole many years later.

Thanks, D.
