1973 evinrude 115 overcharging problem

hey i have a 115 that is charging at 17 volts from mid to high rpms and at idle it charges at 14 volts. whats wrong with the motor? thanks

Nothing wrong. Thats the nature of a charging system without a regulator. Yours only has a rectifier. Be sure to keep topping the battery up with water, as it will lose its level over time...

A system like that one depends on the battery as a voltage regulator. The higher capacity the battery, the steadier the voltage stays.

You cannot use a maintenance free or a sealed battery with your unregulated charging system. A group 27 or 31 battery that you can add water to works the best. Another fix is to wire 2 batteries in parallel.

Back in those days, we also turned on the running lights to help dissipate the excess voltage.

is there a way to adapt a voltage regulator? my VHF radio doesnt like the high voltage.

You can also go to any BRP dlr and get a part # 173640 regualtor kit. They came out about the time this mtr was built.
