1973 Bayliner 165hp OMC inline 6 coil **no spark**

I have read thru the sticky's for troubleshooting the ignition system. I also tried to see the sticky on how the ignition system works. That link seems to be dead. I would have liked to see that one.

I had the boat running, but noticed the points were looking bad. So we replaced them & now there is no spark. We have the + side of the coil hooked up to the 12v source & the - side going to the points & to the tachometer.

I have tried numerous suggestions in how to test my coil but none of them gives me conclusive results that it is either good or bad. Is there a great link to how I test a coil using a multimeter that explains how in basic terms?

If the coil is good what else could be the problem?

Thanks

Think of the points as a switch. if the switch is open you will have 12 volts to the hot side. This is the wire from the - side of the coil. when the points close "switch closed" the 12 volts go to ground and your meter will show 0. If you turn engine over with with the starter a test light will blink on and off if it is hooked to the - side of the coil if every thing is working right.

google coil they are simple to test.or unhook neg side coil wire grab a piece of wire hook to neg side of coil, then position centre coil wire that normally goes to dis.about half inch from ground turn key to run take other end of coil neg wire and every time you strike ground it should fire.my thought if was working before point change you have installed points wrong, they are probly grounded.my expereance if you do something then it dont work.99.99% of time thas where problem will lie.points should only be grounded when closed.

The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

If the boat was running, and you decided to replace the points, and now you have no spark, the simple answer is there is something wrong with the points or installation.

Not the coil.

Sometimes new points have a glaze that needs to be removed. You can use some alcohol and clean them, then try again. With your key on and the points closed, spread them open and close them manually and see if you get a spark from your coil that way. You did gap them correctly with the points on the high spot of the distributor cam, right?

You did adjust the point gap (dwell angle) didn't you? And when you do get the engine running it will need to be timed again. Set the point gap first then time the engine. Timing doesn't affect dwell but dwell affects timing.

I tested the coil & could not get it to test positively, so I replaced it. (I also could not get the new coil to test positively, but now I know the new coil is good) I then rechecked that the points were installed & gaped properly. Next I checked the gaps at every spark plug, then disconnected & reconnected every wire in the ignition system. I set the distributor at TDC for cylinder #1 & it fired right up. Then I adjusted it with my timing light and it purred.

Good to hear. Retry your old coil. If good it will make a spare so you dont have to go get one next time.

not sure about a 6 cylinder, but do the engine have power. if no power is going to the engine check the fuse, my v8 have a 50 amp fuse on top of the engine, that is if you have no power. to check yur coil go to youtube.com and search how to test a cil. hpe this help you out.
