Hello,
Do y’all think I need a water pump?

This model of Evinrude does not have a telltale. When run on muffs water comes out under those 2 screws. When I run just in bucket water no water comes out there.

I used a temp gun on the block where the thermostat is and it didn’t immediately heat up but I didn’t want to risk it and shut the motor off after about a minute .

Last maintenance was done in 2015 -lower unit seals and I think a bearing. The work order does not say that they changed the water pump.
The boat as been stored since 2015.

Thank you!

Correction: apparently it is a 1974.. I called a shop and they said the 70hp didn’t come out until 1974

Outboards need a new impeller about every 5 years.----And have you tested the overheat horn ??

Shoot :/ . I’ll test the overheat horn in the next day or so.

I do have an update though: apparently I needed to have the water deeper for the water pump to even work (needs to be a few inches above the cavitation plate).
So I’m going to lake test it with a temp gun..

You still need a a new impeller regardless of not being used. They dry out and get a set to them.
The impeller needs to be soft and pliable to perform properly. It’s a lot cheaper than waiting for an overheat to occur and risking other damage not to mention getting stranded on the water.

So…. I put it in the water because I really wanted it running and the local shop is 8 weeks out before I could get her in.
I tested the block temp and I couldn’t find a spot on the block over 139 degrees F.
I’ll check the temps each time I run it this season and I’ll get it in the shop during the winter. Thanks for your input all, this forum is awesome!

Video below of it running :)

Is water at least being discharged out the 2 Idle Relief holes?
Looks nice for a 49 yr old motor

From what I can tell all of the areas that water comes out of when I run it on muffs are underwater when it’s in the lake.. doesn’t have any telltale unfortunately.
I’ll just keep checking the temps every time I go out.
We have a place on the lake and it’s not a huge lake so there’s no chance of actually be stranded if I have to shut it down.

And thanks, my dad bought it new and always took pride in keeping the engine hood in good shape. The boat isn’t bad either, the dash “wood” sticker is peeling and I just need to peel the rest of it off. The seats are splitting on the top but I have a couple of orange towels I can put on them so it looks better
