Hello All,
I have a 1976 Johnson 6HP (looks like new) that I picked up as a seized motor for $50 (I figured I could part it out and make $50 if need be). A shot of penetrating oil in the cylinders and a very light twist on the flywheel a few hours later (by hand) and we are no longer seized! The guy I bought it off of used it 1.5 months ago and said that it simply seized up when he was at the lake. He sold his boat and then had this motor left over.
I have the flushing muffs and decided to fire up the motor now that it is no longer stuck. It fired up on the 3rd pull. It idles great and will rev up (didn't rev it too high as the motor was not in a test tank). Trouble is that it stalls when I rotate the tiller handle control to "Shift or Slow". If I am really fast, I can rotate to shift, pop it in gear (forward or reverse) and then rotate back to idle. I can even rev it up a little while in gear and the prop spins great. I can rotate the handle back to idle and everything is great. As soon as I rotate to "Shift or Slow" it stalls? Rotate back to "Start" and 1 pull to start it back up again.
I did look up "Stalling motors" on the forum but did not run accross anything with this scenario?
Advice welcome!
The guy I bought it from put new spark plugs in, so I have no idea of burn patterns on the old plugs. I don't have a compression fitting that fits for my compression tester. Though, it fires up crazy easy so I don't know if compression is really an issue?
Thanks in advance!
