Can anyone tell me if it's okay to use automobile transmission fluid (dextron) in my 1973 65hp evinrude or is there a difference between that and outboard transmission fluid?

Thanks,
David

you could clean your lower with dexron but you need to drain it and use type c if it is elec shift.

the answer is no, it is not a transmisson, it is a gear box. 72 was last year of electric shift, use HI VIS lower unit oil, it is an 80-90wt oil with additives incase of water intrusion, be sure to replace the seal on the drain and vent screws.

OMC/BRP Hi-Vis is a superior oil developed to deal with the high loads on modern lower units. Generic 80-90 Outboard gear oil would be an acceptable alternate, but not as good. ATF, No way.
