I am trying to wire the key switch for my 1973 65 hp evinrude motor but I'm not having much luck. Does anyone know where the wires are supposed to be located? I am replacing the key switch with a "free standing" switch (not in the control box), so I have six terminals on the switch and need to know what color wires go where. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

We know the terminals are marked M, M, A, C, S, and B.

Now, what color wires do you have there?

The wiring harness is red. Wire location are as follow: C=purple, S=black, A=white,
M(small)=black/yellow, B=red/purple, M=ground back to the battery. The choke is the only thing that works with the wires in these locations.

Thanks

look at the colors again at the key switch end, the colors you denote are not quite what the red plug harness had. are both sides of the ign harness the same color plug? they made it with black, yellow and red plugs.

Raised "M" Term = Black/Yellow

Regular "M" Terminal = Black

Terminal "A" = Purple

Terminal "S" = White

Terminal "B" = Red/Purple

Terminal "C" = See Note Below:

NOTE:

1 - If using a seperate "Choke Switch", a "Purple" wire should run from the "A" terminal of the ignition switch to one of the choke switch terminals. In which case, leave the "C" terminal blank.

2 - If you intend NOT to use a seperate choke switch and intend to use the "Push" feature of the ignition switch to operate the choke, connect the Purple/White wire to the "C" terminal of the ignition switch.

I checked the key switch end, the wire colors are white, black, purple,black/yellow, red/purple. There are also tan and purple, but I think those go to the warning buzzer. Both ends of the plug are red. Thought??

Thanks

The TAN wire connects to the warning horn. The purple wire you speak of, if it is leading from the "A" terminal of the ignition switch, also connects to the warning horn.

If you have the plastic warning horn which has a built in black ground wire, the TAN wire must connect to the terminal closest to that black wire.
