okay, so this boat motor has been doing this for awhile but every now and then it doesn't.

so the engine has been doing this since I've owned it, what happens is the engine runs and sounds kind of funny, it will be real shaky and jerk every few mins/seconds and sound like it wants to die, sometimes it does die. Also, i can't go very fast because it will rev up really high and the prop wont spin.

I took it out last week and the engine ran like it was brand new the whole time i had it started! I got it out the week before for the first time for the year and this also happened. I had it running for about 30-45mins. I was really amazed, i have a 14 ft aluminum v-boat boat. My 2 friends and I that weighed a total of probably around 600lb's and still it went as fast as it could, lifted the boat up with no problem, but we dropped the anchor for about 4 hours and when i started it back up got going a minute up the river, it started to sputter, act real funny and i couldn't go fast anymore.

The shear pin is not broken but the shear pin does not go all the way across the propeller on the inside, should it?

Also, it has some oil leaking out of a hole near the propeller. i have not changed the oil at the bottom the whole 2 years ive had it but i have not had it out but a couple times because of the problem that keeps happening. idk if that could cause it to rev up and not spin the propeller.

Another thing is that it sounds like its at higher RPM's than it should be while running. when its idling it doesn't seem like that. the reason i say that is because when it ran like it was new for the first 2 times ever having this engine it was not as loud.

i really need some help! im posting a lot of pictures because this is my first boat/engine and i would rather have a lot of them then not enough and I've called dealers around and they wont work on it because its to old.

ALSO I DON'T KNOW THE RIGHT FUEL/OIL RATIO SO I JUST DO 50:1. PLEASE TELL ME IF THIS IS WRONG.

PLEASE ASK ANY QUESTIONS OR GIVE YOUR OPINION ON ANYTHING YOU SEE.

okay now with these pictures i have 2 comments. 1: there is something missing in the engine, its looks like a screw of some sort or something that screws in should go there. 2: the hookup onto the original tank, doesn't stay hooked all the way in, idk if because it wont stay all the way on its causing it to kick/shake/not want to stay running/sound like that.

THE 3RD PIC IS THE INSIDE OF THE PROPELLER.

Sounds like it is running on one cylinder. I had a 76 25 hp that suddenly dropped a cylinder. You should inspect the coils for cracks and do a spark test. Look at the sticky files. If you are not getting a good spark on both sides you should probably pull the flywheel and replace the points and condensers (also in sticky files). If it where a LU issue it would not be intermittent. There are many experts here that know far more than I but it sounds like a spark/ignition issue to me.

Edited! When will I learn to read the whole post.

I had a motor that acted a lot like yours. So before you remove your flywheel try this. Look at the spark plug boot. The part you push onto the spark plug. Check to see that the wire in the spark plug cable is making good contact with that spring like connector in the boot. You should be able to pull the boot of the cable. See number 45 in this diagram.

OEM Parts

Notice that little hook in the spring like part. That's what pierces the spark plug cable to make contact with the wire. I like to strip a 1/4 inch of insulation back exposing the wire then after piercing the insulation with the hook I wrap a couple of turns of the bare wire around the straight exposed part of the hook. I replaced a lot of parts before I discovered that was the problem.

I have a 68' 18 Fastwin. It came with 3 props. I wondered why the "stock" one wasn't being used, so I tried it. The rubber collar inside the prop had delaminated causing the same "high rev but no speed" problem.

That's called a spun hub and is a fairly common problem on props that do not use shear pins. Most props can usually be re-hubbed at a professional prop shop for about $40-$60.
