I've got an opportunity to pick up a 72 18' SS with an Evinrude 140. The boat needs a complete gut and rebuild but I'm interested in anybody's thoughts about the motor. I've been a Mercury guy for a long time is this vintage Evinrude a motor worth messing with?

The best engine is the one that works.....if it works....that is a great set up.

If it has good compression then dive-in!

What year is the motor? Is it a selectric? (electric shift); Electric shift replacement components are tough to find.

Re: 1972 SS w/ 140 Evinrude

I don't have experience with the evinrude 140, but I had a 115 on a lund tyee that I was very happy with. Currently I am running a johnson 85 (same motor as the 140 evinrude except for carbs and I believe exhaust), on my 18 ft SS. Motor is a 1973 model and I am constantly amazed at how well it runs. To my knowledge it has never been torn apart. One thing I will caution you about is fuel consumption. If you run that thing full throttle, you should be able to pass anything but a gas station. Throttle back a little, and it shouldn't be too bad

A vintage Evinrude is far more worth messing with than a vintage Mercury. Better parts support and simpler design. A 140 shouldn't be terribly old or electric shift. Those would have been 135s. Great motor.

From everything I've heard and read the 140's are great motors. I was looking at one last fall for a repower but I never pulled the trigger. If I remember correctly they refer to it as a big block, V4. They have a very large following if you look them up on the 'net.

I had to pass on this boat:( but if anyone near Central NJ is interested it's available. 72 18' SuperSport 140 hp Evinrude. The hull is nice and solid but all the wood is rough or rotted including the transom. It sits on a decent trailer and the motor looks a little rough hasn't run in several years but it isn't seized (also a mechanical shift not electric) The owner is looking for $500 to get it out of his drive way. If your interested PM me and i'll get you the contact details.

IMPOSSIBLE. The 140 is a great motor but was not made until 1977. That is an excellent combination and ALL the parts are available. Someone would be foolish not to jump on that deal. The only reason I would shy away from that deal is if there was low/unbalance compression. A compression gauge, a set of jumper cables and a few simple tests would tell the tale. Hmmmm an 18'er ........

Trust me it was a tough decision not to pull the trigger. Space and time won over my desire to rebuild another SS. I have a 76 that I redid several years ago and I love it.
