This is a little off the boat subject, but if I don't get this fixed I will have a 350 lb anchor for sale cheap. This engine is in snowmobile. A 1972 model, OMC 234e twin, spec 161141, ser. 014672. It just died one day, I found that it lost spark. It uses a electronic module with 8 wires to it, twin ignition coils,Two pick-ups and twin mags to power the ignition system under the flywheel.
I think the module went bad.The pickups, coils, and power mags are not shorted but with out specs I don't know what I should be checking. I would not mind changing the whole system if no parts are available.I think it is the same as the outboard system.Any help would be greatly appreciated. This thing ran so great for a vintage machine that has reverse and electric start to boot. dougx75@hotmail.com

Be sure the kill circuit isn't grounded. Trace the wire from kill switch to be sure. Never checked, but there must be zillions of parts around for those puppies.....

Good luck :)

Thanks for the quick reply, I should have mentioned I disconnected the kill button
and I am working with just the ignition system by itself which bypasses the ignition switch and all. Ismo dougx75@hotmail.com

Check all coils for continuity. Usually their resistance is so low it appears as a short, but you certainly don't want high resistance, except in the ign. coil secondary. If all coils read continuity, odds are good its the module. I'm sure they are easy to find used. If not, let me know.

Nothing beats a manual for troubleshooting!!!

Good luck!! :)

Does the power pack have a part number. I know a shop that has power packs and can rewind the stator. Www.Rapair.com. If you call Ray at 256-772-3829, he can tell you what system ,and how to trouble shoot system.

I believe the 50 horse outboards used that same ignition system, with some parts sharing the same part numbers.Rebuilt components are available for OMC snowmobiles from Rapair Inc.
