I have a 1972 Mercury 110, serial # 3264988 that is not peeing. This motor has been in storage for the past 5 years, so I am guessing it needs a new impeller. I have ordered a Seloc manual that covers this motor, but am wondering if I need to just buy the impeller, or, do I need a water pump kit? From what I have read on this site, this is not a difficult job, but I am concerned with getting all of the seals and other parts I will need once I tear into it. I hope to receive the manual within a few days, and I am sure that will help, but I would like to get the parts now so that I can start once the manual arrives. Also, does anyone know if this motor has a thermostat? One manual I looked at said it did, but the diagram it shows is incorrect for my motor.

Thanks!

if I don't see any deep groves cut in the cup or end-plate, I put just the impellar in. :)

I am sure that your motor doesn't have a thermostat. They weren't used until the early - mid 80's

Happy boating, and good motor you have there. The "Tower of Power :)

Craig

First you can put your lower end deep into water to check for other problems. My 110 wouldn't pee until I had the water in the garbage can up pretty high. But deep in water it would pee so that told me none of the hoses were clogged. After I replaced the impeller it would pee while running in a 5 gallon bucket. If yours is like mine, (a 70 model) the only pee will come from the hose on the left side of the engine. The telltale doesn't blow water on these.

Good Luck,
Rob

Re: 1972 Mercury 110 Questions

Thanks for all of the excellent advice. I tore it apart last night, and the impeller was indeed shot. Does anyone know what "Perfect Seal" is? The manual says to coat the inside of the waterpump insert with it. Is there something else that would work if I can't find it? Also, it seemed strange to me that the drive shaft is not centered in the water pump, which causes the impeller to be compressed on one part of its revolutions.

Thanks again for all the advice.

Tom

Hi Tom,
The off-center pump is on purpose - if the shaft was centered, you'd have a really nice little water spinner, but it wouldn't pump much. The water comes in at the area where the blades are almost extended and then as the pump spins, the blades are compressed. Water, being non-compressable, is then forced up the water tube into the motor.
I don't usually have to seal anything on those water pumps. Take 'em apart, replace the impeller, and reassemble. Shouldn't need the whole kit unless the stainless insert cup is corroded or scuffed up badly. Be sure to grease the upper end up the driveshaft with waterproof grease before putting the L/U back on the motor - keeps the driveshaft and crankshaft from becoming rusted together.
- Scott

Re: 1972 Mercury 110 Questions

Thanks all for the excellent advice. I am happy to report that the new impeller has been installed the the motor has been re-assembled and is working just fine. I do have one more question, however: The throttle is very stiff and seems like it needs lubricating...any suggestions? The tiller grip works fine...it is the part that actually rotates just below the flywheel that is stiff. If I assist the tiller grip, it moves without any problems; however, if I just use the tiller grip, it is very hard to turn. What kind of lubrication should I use, and where should I apply it?

Thanks again,

Tom

Re: 1972 Mercury 110 Questions

I was told to use vasaline on the impeller, much like an O-ring. If you start it in the water it should be good as that just keeps it from sticking until water lubes it. Some motors you have to put the blades in the right direction I have heard, others say no matter. I do to be safe. Hold the outside blades and rotate the center the direction the motor runs the shaft, and slip it in, or note the way it is bent on removal.

The manual says to lube about everything that moves in there for a Merc I6. Need to get to the bearing/sleeve or whatever and lube it. Most linkages take light oil.
