We have a 72 1150 that will not start. This motor has run for a while now in our possession, we have had it out several times before the timing belt broke a month ago or so, now after replacing the belt, and timing the motor, we had it running good, and then it just quit on us half way accross the lake the other day, we have not been able to get fuel into the cylinders since. It we remove the plugs and put fuel in the cyl's it starts for a few seconds, but if we spray fuel directly into the carbs, nothing. Compression is good on all cyl's, fuel pump is pumping a strong stream, the timing appears right, what else? Can the reed valves on the crank freeze to a point of blocking completely off? We don't know what to try next. We are replacing all the vacumn lines as a precaution, but what else can we check? Any ideas?

It would be very unusual for your reed valves to stick or break. Are the transfer covers loose or leaking

Not that I am aware of. How do I check for that?

I would make sure the transfer cover bolts are snug, and the gaskets look OK around the perimeter of the covers.

Also, pull off a carb and put your hand over the crankcase intake and see if it has vacuum. if it doesn;t have vacuum, you need to find out why. Maybe the crankcase cover has an air leak?

Thank you. We were able to get it going finally. Now we just need to get it all syncronized, but it is running. We found water in the fuel so that has been taken care of.
