Recently I purchased a 1972 Glastron GT 160 and it has a 125 hp Johnson "Super Stinger" on the back. I'm assuming the motor is around the same year as the boat. I'm fairly new to boating and the engine is definitely older than I am so I'm pretty much wet behind the ears when it comes to the ins and outs. I do know that it's a two stroke motor with 4 cylinders (or at least that's how many spark plugs I counted). Sometimes the engine has a tough time when we put it in F. As we ease from a gentle low wake speed to a more quick speed the engine sometimes stutters and stalls. It seems that if we let it run in the low wake speed for awhile (15 minutes...maybe a warming period?) it seems to do much better and we can pull into a high rpm. I was wondering if anyone had heard of this symptom before as it may be common to the engine or boating procedure. Also, could there be any specific tune ups/PM's that could be done to help with this problem? Besides that "little" issue, this engine seems to be in great shape: clean, sounds good, flies on the water (after we get through). Also, I was wondering if anyone had some expertise on determining the 2 stroke oil to gas ratio so that the engine runs well? I think that the manual calls for a 50:1, but as old as the engine is and with newer quality 2 stroke oils, is this still correct? I figure if the oil mix is quite rich, there may be plug fouling. We saw an improved run (only one data point to go from) after we lightened the oil content. If you could help me out with any info, I would really appreciate it!

welcome to iboats. post the model number of your engine, so we can date it, and know what you have. there are several possiblities, dirty carbs, link & sinc, but lets find out what you have, first.

if that is indeed a 1972 125 hp,use 50:1 oil ratio, champion spark plugs gapped at .030, that year 125 uses cd ignition with a sensor.sensor gap is .028. due yourself a huge favor and get a manual, their invaluable.plugs are l76v.lets make sure of the year first though.

Re: 1972 Johnson "Super Stinger"

I'm really at a loss as to what the model number of the motor is. There's so little information to go on besides what the previous owner said. There's no legible info on the motor itself: looks as if there may have been a sticker with model info at one point, but it's shredded. I couldn't find any other info anywhere else on the casing or on the throttle control. Any ideas as to how to obtain a model number?

I would advise against running anything less than 50:1 on that engine unless you are fond of powerhead rebuilds.

Thanks for the picture. Congratulations on your promotion to "Supreme Mariner"! If I remember correctly, I possibly recall seeing something resembling a disc and wondering why it was there. I'll check on that later today. Is there a general/standard location where those things can be located?

By "less" do you mean less gasoline?

I haven't had a chance to look for the model number but the more research I do, I'm pretty sure that it's a 72 Johnson 125 hp. The "super stinger" decal is probably something added. I think I recall holes where the original decals may have been located.

I'd say that this picture (and yes, the lady came with the engine!) is my engine almost without a doubt.
