Recently I purchased a 1972 Glastron GT 160 and it has a 125 hp Johnson "Super Stinger" on the back. I'm assuming the motor is around the same year as the boat. I'm fairly new to boating and the engine is definitely older than I am so I'm pretty much wet behind the ears when it comes to the ins and outs. I do know that it's a two stroke motor with 4 cylinders (or at least that's how many spark plugs I counted). Sometimes the engine has a tough time when we put it in F. As we ease from a gentle low wake speed to a more quick speed the engine sometimes stutters and stalls. It seems that if we let it run in the low wake speed for awhile (15 minutes...maybe a warming period?) it seems to do much better and we can pull into a high rpm. I was wondering if anyone had heard of this symptom before as it may be common to the engine or boating procedure. Also, could there be any specific tune ups/PM's that could be done to help with this problem? Besides that "little" issue, this engine seems to be in great shape: clean, sounds good, flies on the water (after we get through). Also, I was wondering if anyone had some expertise on determining the 2 stroke oil to gas ratio so that the engine runs well? I think that the manual calls for a 50:1, but as old as the engine is and with newer quality 2 stroke oils, is this still correct? I figure if the oil mix is quite rich, there may be plug fouling. We saw an improved run (only one data point to go from) after we lightened the oil content. If you could help me out with any info, I would really appreciate it!
