I have a 1972 Johnson and a 1973 Evanrude. The Ign systems are different. Both Motors are pull and electric start. the 1972 has 2 coils on the out side of the motor and charges the battery. the 1973 the spark plug wires come from onder the flywheel and i do not think it can charge the battery. I think with just changing the fly wheel and the armiture plate i can have either system. But witch is the better ign system. is the 1972 better with the 2 outside coils for more power or the 1973 does it give the same amount of spark?

I have a 69 25 sportster and a 76 25, different systems. The 69 has two "driver coils" under the flywheel and straight plug wires, the 76 has one driver coil under the flywheel and two external coils. I am having a hell of a time rebuilding the 76 ignition system while the 69 is a beast and has great spark and was easy to rebuild ignition, I am thinking of getting the old school flywheel and arm plate for my 76 b/c I am so frustrated w/ it. I am surprised your 72 has external coils but both of my 25s are pull start.

yup. around the early-mid 70's they "improved" the ignition from the good 'ol universal magneto system (i.e. points and condensers) to the ones you've described. Thankfully, you can convert them back to the old style ignition if you want. However, I'm not sure if you'll need a new/old flywheel. Check here in the forums for threads on how to do it.

It's kind of silly trying to answer this question without knowing what motors we are talking about. Frankly, I can't think of any 1972 motor that had external coils and then back under the flywheel for '73. Sounds like a powerhead swap, serial number swap, or some other whatever. Or just mistaken identity. More info, please.

the 1972 is the 40R72E Johnson and the 1973 Evinrude is the 40305D.

40R72E has Elec choke, pull and elec start, Charges Battery, two coils on side of motor

40305D has pull and elec start, coils under flywheel

on the boat now is the 40305D I just did alot of jb welding on the block and its running and wow its not like a chain saw behind me.
