I removed the gear case and insatlled a water pump kit. Now if I turn the prop, it makes a clicking noise. If I turn the fly wheel by hnad the prop rurns no matter in drive, nuetral or reverse. Am I stuck in gear. Whats the cause and remidy? HELP

Re: 1972 Johnson model 85ESL72R

This is because the shifting mechanism in this lower unit is controlled by 12 volts being applied to shift solenoids which control a hydraulic pump. With no power applied to them (motor off) the unit is in forward which would explain why the prop turns when you turn the flywheel. If you start up the motor, you should find that it shifts properly (provided you properly reconnected the two shift wires that run from just in front of the water pump, through the exhaust housing, and into the powerhead).

Jim

thanks JT. I reconected wires. I had the ignition on but what you are saying is the motor has to be started. Thanks. This is going to be the first time I take it out and didn't want to have a problem.

I hope you check this again and get this warning...in your original post, you said you turned the flywheel by hand but didn't mention you had the ignition on. DON'T EVER DO THAT AGAIN!!! Should the engine decide to start, you could lose a hand or more. Just a thought. Good luck with the engine on your first time out.

Jim
