Hi everybody,

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 1972 Johnson 85 horse? I need to install a new ignition switch because there are no keys for it (bought it that way).
I did read another thread that gave a reference For "A B S C M M" for a different Johnson Motor but I wasn't quite sure if it was the same in '72.

Also, the control box that came with it is an Evinrude "Selectric" with a "black plug", and from what I've been reading here they are not exactly interchangable with the Johnson "Hydro-Electric". The throttle cable of course mates up, but am I wrong in assuming that the shift switch is not right for the Johnson. I have read that zero volts on green and blue is default forward. 12v on green = neutral. 12v on both green and blue = reverse. I was wondering if the purple wires, with and without white stripes are the crux of the incompatability? One goes to the over heat alarm I believe. One goes back to the powerhead. Or is it the something else I'm not aware of.
I would like to get a service manual for it but right now it is a little too pricey. Might have to wait a month or two.

Thanks in advance for any help you might have!

I've just read a few more threads and from what people are saying they are not interchangeable. What will a "selectric" do to a "hydro-matic"? I'm wondering if the previous owner put a hydro-electric gear switch on the selectric control box. is there a model # on the switch that I could check? I don't see one on top. I'll probably have to take the box apart to check if it does.

Yes. Thank you Daviet. Now (unfortunately) I have many more. I can't seen to get any spark quite yet. But I am thrilled that I wired it well enough to get the starter motor to engage. I should probably start a new thread for my other questions. I'll post them here too I suppose...not sure if anybody is still watching this thread, but here goes.
What part of the ignition wiring completes the circuit for the spark plug to get spark? I did my best to follow the diagram but I could have it wrong despite my best effort.
My next move is to test that my coil is getting power. If my multi-meter reads 12v on the input positive wire, then I will assume that it is. I want to test the coil itself but my Clymer manual says that the motor needs to be running in order to do this.
I guess my next question is how do you test the coil without the motor running?
Yeah...I still have more questions so I will start new threads since they are not exactly related to a wiring diagram. I'm not quite sure of the iboats protocol.

A new post would be best. Go to the CDI website and look at there trouble shooting section for your engine.

Disregard that part about the motor needing to be running to test the coil. I must have read it wrong because when I went back to read it again, it said to just crank the starter. Sorry about that.
