That motor has Hydro-Electric shift. It defaults to forward gear in case of failure...or if it isn't running. So, the answer is yes it is normal. It is in forward gear and the only way to get it in neutral or reverse is to start the motor.

Those electric shift lowers are pretty notorious for having problems and I am pretty sure parts are none existant.

I would think about walking a way from that one.

the lower units are fine, also long as they work, but the electrics are no longer available. shift switches can be made, but the lower unit solenoids, are not available. i just gave a 71 50 to a guy, who had one, so he would have spare parts.

unless the price of the boat, does not include any value for the motor, i would keep looking. in other word almost free boat.

The wire that is cut is most likely leading to a thermo-switch in the head, on the port side of the motor. The purpose of the switch is to actuate the choke solenoid halfway, unless the motor temperature reaches a certain point.

There is a service bulletin that recommends disconnecting the thermo-switch, because its use tends to make the engines run excessively rich during the warmup period. What it does, is to make the solenoid actuate half way, thus applying partial choke.

In my opinion, cutting the wire to accomplish this task is the wrong way to go about things. I would splice it and then disconnect it properly. Note that, per SB1335 (below), there are two terminals on the terminal block that should be jumped (starboard side of engine) - this allows the choke to actuate fully, when the manual choke switch at the control box is engaged.

does it have two cables going from the control box to the motor or one cable and one wire? If two cables manual shift. If one cable and one wire loom electric shift.

and

this '75 evinrude 50's control box with the throttle on it looks -exactly- like the one on my '75 evinrude 135, which has only cables and no harness. so my fingers are crossed

thanks,

hard to tell from a small pic, but looks like a shift handle on the starboard side which would mean manual shift.

aaargh! from the pic, it looks to me like the shift handle is on the port side of the control box. but the control box goes on the starboard side of the boat. so I'm not sure which you mean.

also, I have another evinrude outboard of the same year with what looks like the exact same box, and it's manual shift. could they have used the same control box for both manual and electro shift options?

I'm thinking this mystery might now be solved, (at least as far as my angle on this), another post in another thread said that '72 was the last year of electric shift. mine is a '75.

That control box would not work with a hydro-electric shift model, but you appear to be correct in assuming that the motor is not a 1972 model. One tip-off is the tilt tube - the 1972 model doesn't have one.
