1972 Johnson 40R72E 40hp. I just bought this boat and know nothing of boats. The engine is a pull and electric start. Manual and electric choke. ( electric part missing on choke) The wiring to the key was not hooked up. I think it might charge if the key is wired right. All the pictures that I have found look nothing like like what I have as far as colors. The switch looks just like the Sierra MP41000. This is in a post ( Key Switch Replacement....Wire Placement Confusion ) The person has a Picture up of his switch and the Sierra ( 85 sea nymph 15'6" Johnson 40hp J40TLERE switch is G03532642) It looks just like mine, but the color are way different. The colors I have are
Red / power all the time
white / goes to starter noid
blue / has postive power when engine running
Blue with white strip / ??
Purple with white strip / hooked up to a square unit in the middle of it and of it is a white wire going up to a switch that hits the timer plate
No ground in the wire harness that I know of it only has those wires.
It looks like I am missing a nettral safty switch.
On the side with the ign coils it has the refactor that has 4 wires coming out of it that goes to a flat panel and from the panel it goes up to the stator.
The refactor is round little larger than a quarter in diamiter and about 3/4 inch deep it has 4 wires the wires go to the panel and the color are the same going from the panel to the stator, from top of engine going straight down the are hooked up in this order. Red, yellow with blue strip, yellow with grey strip, yellow not strip.
Off the stator it has the wires going to the panel plus 1 black wire screwed to the stator base and going to the block as a ground, 2 blue wires one going to each coil.
The starter noid has 4 hook up to the battery post has the battery and 2 red wires. starter enage 1 white whire, next small post a white wire that is a ground, and the last post is large and goes to the starter.
A purple with a white strip that should hook to the choke but choke is missing. This wire is going around to the side of engine going to I think the kill switch?????????
The recap the wiring harnes has 6 wires. The only other wires leaving the motor is the 2 battery cables ( Pos and Neg going straight to the battery)
The Key has only has 6 wires coming out the wiring harness. The key has the same hook up spots as the Sierra MP41000 But it is a Johnson switch.
I hope this is enough information that someone can help me out. I have pictures but I do not know how to post them so you can look at them. I have them up on facebook.
This is the page I had to sign in to pull them up. Or my name is Hubert Muncy if you just search for friend and then look at my Pictures its the album Boat May 2011.
