I recently acquired a 1972 Johnson 40 hp outboard. The motor starts up quickly but when I attempt to apply the throttle to get the boat on a plane it dies. The motor will fire right back up and idle in and out of gear great I just cant get it to throttle up past about 1500 rpm without it killing the motor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

It has a dual ignition system.------One of those may not be sparking.----Do a compression test as well.

If the spark and compression check out good, you might want to check the carb, see if it is dirty or the jet is plugged.

Compression is great (120) on both cylinders, carb is clean. It does look like the point gap is way two large. I'm waiting on a manual from Seloc in the meanwhile what is the procedure for setting the points?

Install the flywheel nut on the crank, rotate the crank until the rubbing block on the points align with the key in the crankshaft, set points to .020. Rotate the crank and do the other set of points, remember to torque the flywheel nut when done.
