I have 1972 johnson 20hp seahorse. I was out on the lake and it felt like the prop was missing or free spinning but was still able to move forward. Went out a few days later and it was slower and started knocking it else out of forward, a little later it would shift into forward but would not catch. Was not able to go forward, i still had reverse but not forward. Check the prop and it is not free spinning. Any idea of what I need to look for the fix this. Thanks.

Hi seahorse. Welcome to iboats. It sounds like you may have a spun prop and/or a broken shear pin. To check, remove the prop and scribe a line across the back of both surfaces and get the motor back up to speed to see if you can reproduce the problem, then remove the prop again and see if the line is still level and intact. If it is, then you may have a worn clutch dog, if the the line is not level then you have a spun hub in your prop in which case you'll have to either get a new prop, or get it rehubbed at a pro shop for about $40.

X- 2. Good advice above. Also check your shift linkage for any slop in it.
