I am about to embark on a purchase of mentioned boat in the Subject line. It has 185 hours on the engine/boat and has been sitting in a garage for about 2-3 years. The last time it was out on a lake it died and would not restart. What kind of investment am I looking at after the purchase as I know I will be getting a steal on it as it is family owned? Also, What type of problems should I expect after such a long period of sitting? The boat was never prepped for such a long period of "dry dock" per say...

Lost In Sacramento, CA

Well I have been that route myself. Be prepared to do allot of cleaning of varnished gas lines, fuel tanks, carbs....replace the tilt trim oil, change the plugs, lower unit oil. Basically you will be going through everything. My biggest obstacle was the electrical connections. There was allot of corrosion so I removed all the connections and lightly sanded each one. Is it on a trailer? Be prepared to re-pack (or re-place) the bearings. You might have a job ahead of you but it is a "labor of love" .... just consider if you have the time (and friends who will help) to do your project. Best of luck if you do it.

Lost Boater 72

If you scroll down through the archives you see that I have a problem with my 70's Johnson 125 HP. Over the years the engine has proven to be quite reliable, however last season it began to develop a problem (see my posting) that I/we have not been able to pinpoint. The mechanic feels (not sure) it is probably the power pack which he quoted a costing 350 dollars plus fitting and tax. He told me that normally power packs are around the 100 dollar mark, but because these engines were only made for about three years the parts can be hard to source, and this also drives the cost of the parts. I am at a point that this year I have spent a lot of money on the outboard, and I should really start considering buying another one. As I mentioned previously, this engine
has proven to be strong and reliable over the years. If your engine has only 185 hours on it, then once you have it sorted out I am sure it will prove quite reliable for years to come. Good Luck

Greg

Interesting. I just picked up a 1969 Glastron with a 1969 Johnson 125 that sat for about 4 years. I rebuilt the carbs, replaced battery cables, replaced the battery, and coil. It ran rough and now not at all . Mechanic I talked to said most likely the power pack @ $350 for the part. Meanwhile I found that the transom on the boat is cracked....Only paid $100 but it's a money pit. I'm thinking about selling the motor instead of putting more $ into it.
Good luck.
